25th March 2009
Wednesday 25th March 2009: Top Dublin radio station Dublin’s 98 has banned Britney Spear’s new single “If U Seek Amy ” due to the thinly disguised obscenity contained in the title. Dublin’s 98 decided to take action against the offensive nature of the song before of the potential upset it could cause listeners.
Speaking about the ban, Andy Matthews, Dublin’s 98 Programme Director said “There is very little to misinterpret from the lyrics, and it can be clearly heard throughout the song. We felt it best to ban the track in order to avoid causing any offense to our listeners”.
Recent winners of the Meteor Award for Best Regional DJ Dermot, Dave & Siobhan from The Morning Crew have removed it from their playlists. “ As many of our listeners are parents and children on their way to school there was no way we could play Britney’s new single” said Siobhan O’ Connor.
Britney, who is currently in the middle of her world tour, has caused outrage with the release of “If U Seek Amy ” in both Australia and America. Dublin’s 98 are the first Irish radio station to follow suit and ban the track.
