Elmar Tracks Estonia\'s 1000 Best Songs

During the first week in February 2006, listeners of the No 1 radio station in Estonia, Radio Elmar, voted to line up 1000 favourite songs
in Estonian language. Listeners could name their 3 favourite songs on phone, send a fax or e-mail or vote on Elmar Website.
More than 3000 songs got a vote in the campaign. 1000 most popular songs were on air as a five day Chart on Feb 20-24th. No 1 Estonian song was on the air at noon on February 24th, National Independence Day.

The most votes got the song “Suudlus läbi jäätunud klaasi” (A Kiss Through The Frosty Window). Song writer and internationally known Estonian pianist Rein Rannap said to the Radio Elmar, that the song was written in 1982, when band called “Ruja”, was in the top of it’s popularity and they used a lot of retro style characteristic for the 50’s rock’n’roll in US.

Lyrics of the best Estonian song was written by Ott Arder, who has given words to many songs that have become classics today . Rein Rannap said, that he is very happy, that his pop song of eighties has become Estonian music classics.

Radio Elmar PD Owe Petersell said, that it’s good to know, that top 10 songs are all original songs of Estonian authors originating from 80’s, 90’s and nowadays.

Radio Elmar is also happy to know, what is the music our listeners like and our music clock is put together by listeners now.
