Dublin-based designer Annie Atkins became an Oscar winner in the early hours of this morning, but didn’t know until her dad broke the news to her after she fell asleep watching the awards. Annie was the Lead Graphic Designer on Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel, which picked up the Oscar for Best Production Design.
Rather than walking the red carpet in Hollywood at this year’s event, Annie opted for a glamorous night at home with her parents in Wales, eating steak and drinking champagne. She told The Anton Savage Show this morning that she stayed up in her pyjamas for as long as she could but fell asleep around 2.30am. The happy news was broken to her by her dad at 6am this morning.
“It was really late! I was really tired and then I fell asleep and the next thing I knew my dad was knocking at the door and it felt like the middle of the night… I was so confused!”
Wes Anderson’s movie took home four Academy Awards at last night’s event: Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, Best Makeup and Hair and Best Original Score.
