“Nobody knew how to live life so brilliantly”

On Thursday 12th March 2015, Today FM Dj and broadcasting legend Tony Fenton lost his battle with cancer.

Over the following days Today FM staff and friends remembered Tony in the way he would have wanted – with stories of joy and laughter.

National Lunchtime News Tribute

Speaking on the National Lunchtime News which was broadcast shortly after the news broke, Ian Dempsey, Mario Rosenstock and CEO Peter McPartlin paid tribute to their much loved colleague and friend, Tony Fenton who sadly passed away earlier today. Ian spoke about when the legendary DJ joined the station: “One of the proudest moments for me was when we were in Abbey Street with Today FM. I came in one day to find that the entire building had been covered with one of those big huge signs, which said ‘TodayFM, the new home of Tony Fenton”. Gift Grub’s Mario Rosenstock said that “nobody knew how to live life so brilliantly”.

The Last Word Tribute

Later that evening The Last Word devoted all two-and-a-half hours to a special tribute to Tony featuring guests from the musical world including Richard Hawley, Sharon Corr, Aslan’s Billy McGuinness, Joe Elliott, Dave Fanning, Paul Brady and Lisa Hannigan. Many of Tony’s Today FM colleagues recounted stories of their friend down through the years.

Matt Cooper started the show with Bobby Womack’s “Across 110th Street” which was “Tony’s anthem” according to Ian.

The Ian Dempsey Breakfast Show Tribute

The following morning Ian Dempsey and Mario Rosenstock, two of Tony’s closest friends in Today FM, hosted a very special two-hour programme remembering the warmth, passion and fun that made Tony Fenton the legendary broadcaster and human being that he was.
