Hundreds flock to Ballyheigue for Sandstorm
29th Aug 2015: Today, Spin South West in association with Lee Strand Protein Plus Milk, brought SANDSTORM to the shores of Kerry, a 5km beach run and obstacle competition that stormed Ballyheigue Beach.
This unique event, which takes place entirely on sand, consisted of multiple course challenges such as tyre mounds, a netted pyramid, an eight-foot wall, crawling tubes and lots of sand, ensuring a tough challenge for the brave participants.
Local Businesses have been rallying to welcome the crowd to the famous seaside village with Live music and BBQ’s in local venues such as Kirby’s and Flahives Bar adding to the event.
Starting at 12 Noon at the Lifeguards Hut on Ballyheigue Beach the 5 km Course made its way back towards the Black Rock before turning and coming back to finish by the steps on the beach.
Speaking about the origin of SANDSTORM, CEO of Spin South West Jamie Crawford said, “Our research shows that health and fitness is a huge part of the Spin audience lifestyle. We wanted to create a unique and fun event to encourage community participation while also challenging people to get fit and have fun. We have over 1000 registrants for the race which is phenomenal in its first year. We can’t wait to come back next year!”
Cash prizes of €200 were awarded to the fastest finishers (male and female) with all participants receiving bespoke handcrafted medals courtesy of Ballyheigue based business, Monson’s Irish Jewellery. Calvin Deacon was the fastest male with a time of 13minutes and 33 seconds. He found the course challenging and was delighted with his time.
Jessica Deane was the fastest female with an equally impressive time of 16 minutes and 51seconds. This was her first endurance race…..
